When LAPD arrests someone, the person is typically transported to an LAPD jail facility for booking. The booking process includes recording personal information, taking fingerprints and photographs, and documenting the charges. After booking, the person may be released, held pending arraignment, or transferred to a county facility.
LAPD operates its own jail facilities for short-term custody. Individuals facing more serious charges or longer detention may be transferred to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department custody at a county jail. The LASD inmate locator covers county custody — contact the LAPD station for information about individuals held in LAPD facilities.
Central Division covers a dense downtown area that includes civic, residential, commercial, and visitor destinations. If an arrest may have occurred in Downtown Los Angeles, Skid Row, Chinatown, or Little Tokyo, Central is a useful starting point for confirming the arresting division and finding the correct resource.
If someone was recently arrested by Central LAPD, the station can help with division-level questions. The arresting division is not necessarily the place where a person will remain. Processing, booking, release status, and any later transfer can affect where current custody information is available.
